Soak Your Way to Better Sleep

This is the story of how soaking my feet brought my wellness to the next level.

I chose to try a magnesium soak because I was sick of struggling to relax before bed; I was sick of waking up more stiff and sore than I was when I crawled into bed the night before.

When I first heard about the wonders of a magnesium soak, my first thought was, “it’s too much time.”

Between the rush of the workday and the full-time job of parenting when I get home, taking time to soak my feet – no matter how beneficial it might be – sounded like a luxury I couldn’t afford.

Despite this, I knew that magnesium was a big deal. According to the National Institutes of Health, “magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body,” which makes it incredibly important for a well-functioning body.

I learned that taking a magnesium supplement by mouth could improve sleep quality, cardiovascular health, reduce muscle pain, and even help regulate mood and anxiety. Unfortunately for many, oral supplementation can sometimes result in stomach upset and other unpleasant side effects.

As I continued my research, I came across studies suggesting that magnesium is best absorbed transdermally – through the skin. This method of absorption allows the magnesium to skip the gastrointestinal tract, reducing irksome side effects while still giving the user all of the benefits of magnesium supplementation.

I decided it was worth the investment of time and money.

Thanks to a well-timed Facebook ad, I was introduced to Living the Good Life Naturally, a holistic company that carries the magnesium soak I decided to try. Less than a week later, I had the bottle in hand and was carefully reading about the “30-Day Challenge”. Like many natural wellness solutions, it can take some time – and patience – to see results from a magnesium soak, and the brand suggests doing a 45-minute soak every day for 30 days. After that, they suggest cutting back to one to two times per week.

Just a week after I began the challenge, I started to see improvement. My eye twitches went away, my muscle soreness improved, and I slept for 10 hours straight with no soreness.

I even had trouble waking up!

I learned that this strange effect could be balanced by hydrating thoroughly and making sure my body had enough potassium. As I worked through the kinks and stayed consistent, my life improved drastically. Without a doubt, those daily 45 minutes of soaking were giving back in immeasurable ways.

My biggest challenge was actually finding time to complete the soak each day,  but I found a creative solution.

After the hustle and bustle of working a full day, picking up my toddler, and making a balanced dinner, I filled up my bowl and soaked my feet as we ate and shared about our days. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. I wrapped the knowledge up with a ribbon and excitedly thought about my clients who could benefit as well.

Do your research, shop around, and let me know if you decide to give it a try. After all, holistic health is for all of us, and its benefits should be shared.
